'They were like five puppies:' Simon Cowell claims One Direction were a 'nightmare' to work with... and admits he didn't think his son Eric, two, liked him for six months

They're arguably his greatest talent show success story. But Simon Cowell, 56, admitted One Direction were a 'nightmare' to work with in the early stages of their career in an interview with Billboard magazine!

The music mogul explained: 'They were like five puppies -- really excited, loads of opinions, always wanted to hang out.'

Despite the success of the band, Simon said it will be the group's decision if, and when, they decide to return.

'I don’t know if it’s a hiatus or a breakup, to be honest,' said Cowell. 'In a weird way, I don’t want to know...They’ll decide when they want to come back together.'

Since becoming a father for the first time at the age of 54, Simon has been regularly snapped with his girlfriend Lauren Silverman and their two-year-old son Eric.

And while they share a strong resemblance, the X Factor judge revealed it took around six months for the pair to develop a mutual bond.

'I kept saying to Lauren, "I don’t think he likes me,"' recalled Cowell. 'I wasn’t getting a reaction. Then one day, it clicked.'

Simon told the publication he had faith in Harry Styles as the singer looks towards a solo release.

He said: 'He’ll work out what kind of record he wants to make because he’s got great taste -- which is always a help. All the writers and producers want to work with him, understandably, but he probably won’t rush into it.'

And Simon explained how Zayn Malik was still signed to Sony (who also house is Syco label) through RCA Records, but he didn't think it was right to put him on Syco out of respect for the remaining One Direction members.

He said: 'But the boys hadn’t bought into the fact that he was leaving, so out of respect for them, it wasn’t the right thing to put him on Syco....'

Last year's X Factor was a troubled series, with its presenters Olly Murs and Caroline Flack coming under fire and viewing figures reaching their lowest figures in the show's history. And Simon admitted that putting together high-profile televised talent shows was a difficult business.

He admitted: 'Look, it’s not easy; I’m not going to lie to you. I get genuinely miserable. On Idol, especially the last few seasons, you’d finish the year and think, "I wasted nine months of my life."'

Never one to shy away from voicing his opinion, Simon also told Billboard how he appreciated the level of honesty expressed through social media.

He said:'You think I’m honest? Christ almighty, are they honest on social media. And I like that. I like to do things that make a lot of noise.”
