'Nobody's reached out, so whatever': Zayn Malik seethes over his defunct 1D friendships... but admits he is still close to Liam Payne in candid NME interview

Since quitting One Direction last year, Zayn Malik hasn't held back in speaking out about his time in the band and the issues that caused him to want to leave. And in a new explosive interview with NME magazine, the 23-year-old singer - who is now embarking on a solo career, less than a year after he walked away from the band - has revealed more secrets about life post-1D !

When asked about his current relationship with his former bandmates of five years, he admitted: 'I'm still probably the closest to Liam [Payne]. We talk on the phone.'

He added: 'He congratulated me on my single. Which was nice. I congratulated him on his Brit Award.'
'It was a good chat. We hadn't met in a long time so we want to meet up.'

But he added that he hadn't seen him since before he left the band, meaning it has shockingly been over a year as he quit in March 2015. And of his other former bandmates - Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson - Zayn hinted at underlying animosity between them.

'I tried to have contact but nobody's reached out. So…whatever,' he added with a disgruntled air.
He has, however, had a brief amount of public contact with one of his former bandmates: last May, Zayn and Louis were embroiled in a Twitter spat.

Along with the NME interview, Zayn posed in a series of striking, colourful photographs, showing his new image as a solo artist, a decidedly bad-boy persona for the British singer. Showing off his myriad of tattoos on his arms, the shaven-headed handsome young man is seen brooding into the camera in one shot.

And there is also a rare image of him beaming in another candid image, his mouth wide with delight, a sign of his newfound freedom as a lone artist.

Talking on whether it was a 'total f***storm' when he left the band: 'You can be in the eye of it if you choose to be. Or you can let it overwhelm you,' Zayn continued when probed about the media and fan chaos that unsurprisingly ensued when he upped and left the band that formed on The X Factor back in 2010.

'See, I've kept a little bit of my sanity. I understand how the media works. Journos gotta earn their money. Paps have got to earn their money.'
